The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Rapid Acceleration of Diagnostics-Underserved Populations (RADx-UP) aims to ensure that all Americans have access to COVID-19 testing, with a focus on communities most affected by the pandemic. Community-engaged RADx-UP projects will help us to understand and alleviate the barriers to COVID-19 testing across the nation.
As the pandemic continues, many Alabamians have been unable to access ample testing and health services to maintain quality of life. Alabama United, in partnership with #NOWINCLUDED, Alabama AHEC, and the University of Alabama in Birmingham, has made immense strides in providing adequate testing and COVID-19 educational materials to the residents of Franklin, Clarke, and Clay counties.
NIH is developing community-engaged projects across the United States to assess and expand COVID-19 testing for these underserved and/or vulnerable populations, which include health disparity populations, particularly African Americans and American Indians/Alaska Natives; those in nursing homes, jails, rural areas, or underserved urban areas; pregnant women; and the homeless.
A Dynamic COVID-19 Community-Engaged Testing Strategy in Alabama
University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is translating community-informed HIV-testing knowledge to meet the needs for rapid scale-up of COVID-19 testing among rural, socio-economically disadvantaged, and Black/African American populations. “It is significant that UAB and the state of Alabama will be a part of this unprecedented national initiative, engaging hard-hit communities to expand the reach of testing to underserved and vulnerable rural populations,” says project investigator Michael Mugavero.
