Scrambled eggs, wheat toast, fruit, and fresh-squeezed orange juice are a few staples of breakfast. Breakfast is regularly called ‘the most important meal of the day and that statement is hard to argue against, but does it hold true? Well for those of you that skip breakfast while rushing out the door to school or work, we will provide a dish of information that may cause you to stop and enjoy breakfast every morning.
In a rush?
You don’t need a big meal for breakfast, especially if you are pressed for time. However, it is better to have something rather than nothing. But wait…put that sugar-filled donut down! No, don’t go for the cinnamon roll either! Your body won’t appreciate those things. Instead opt for whole-grain cereal with low-fat milk, fruit, or nuts. Whole-grain granola bars are also a good option. Foods that are a good mix of carbohydrates, protein, and fiber are the best option. Carbohydrates provide immediate energy; protein gives it to you later; fiber keeps you feeling full. This will cut down on the desire to reach for an unhealthy snack before lunch.
Take the time to properly nourish your body before tackling your day. You will feel much better, which can lead to more productivity (and you won’t have to worry about that embarrassing stomach growl that can be heard across the office).
Why not wait until lunch?
Even if you don’t consider breakfast all that important, it is still beneficial. It jumpstarts your metabolism after essentially fasting overnight while sleeping. Eating breakfast sends a signal to your body that it will get fed throughout the day and doesn’t have to “hold on” to extra stores of fat. Breakfast combined with healthy meals and snacks throughout the day is a boost to a healthy diet and lifestyle regiment.
Breakfast provides you with fuel to make it through your morning. Even if you are on the fence about whether it is the most important meal, it is certainly hard to deny that getting proper nutrition when starting your day is not a bad idea. Find what is right for you whether that is a small, quick breakfast such as a banana or a heartier option. What you choose is ultimately up to you, just make sure it’s a healthful option.
