NOWINCLUDED Community Members Share Their Thoughts on Maternal Health

In recognition of Black Maternal Health Week, we’re amplifying the voices of the women in our NOWINCLUDED community, sharing their powerful insights and experiences to shed light on the realities of motherhood and the need for change. Our “Mommy Listening Tour” revealed several key themes that demand our attention and action.

  1. The Power of Self-Advocacy: “Fight for your rights.”

A resounding message from our community was the critical need for self-advocacy within the healthcare system. Many mothers emphasized the importance of asking questions, seeking clarity, and refusing to be dismissed. As one mother passionately urged, “Ask all the questions, fight for your rights. Have an advocate, even if you don’t know the medical terms… just keep asking. Just keep talking.” This call to action highlights the systemic challenges that can leave Black women feeling unheard and disempowered during crucial moments of their healthcare journey.

  1. The Indispensable Role of Support Systems: “It’s critical to have a support system.”

The strength and importance of support networks emerged as a vital element in navigating the complexities of motherhood. Whether it’s the unwavering support of family, friends, or dedicated healthcare professionals, having a strong “village” was seen as essential. As another mother emphasized, “It’s critical to have a support system around you that understands the condition you’re living with.” This underscores the need for accessible and culturally relevant support resources.

  1. Navigating Systemic Disparities: “She understands what we go through as Black women.”

Several mothers spoke to the challenges of accessing equitable and respectful care, particularly the impact of racial bias within the healthcare system. One mother’s experience highlighted the importance of finding culturally competent providers: “My OBGYN, she’s Filipino, she would make sure to sit and look at me and listen. She would not rush me. She would ask me, did I have any questions? Were things clear? She understands what we go through as Black women.” This underscores the need for healthcare professionals who are sensitive to the unique experiences and concerns of Black mothers.

  1. The Profound Transformation of Motherhood: “They are my living legacy.”

Beyond the medical challenges, our community members also shared the profound personal transformations that accompany motherhood. One mother reflected on how her priorities shifted: “At first it was like about me… but now it’s God, family, and then business…they are my living legacy. So your character, your ethics, how you carry yourself, how you treat people, is so important.” This sentiment speaks to the deep sense of responsibility and purpose that motherhood instills.

Looking Ahead
These powerful insights from our community members serve as a call to action. We must continue to work toward a healthcare system that empowers mothers, addresses disparities, and provides culturally competent care. By amplifying these voices and sharing these vital stories, we can drive meaningful change and ensure a healthier future for all mothers and their children.
