As the crisp autumn air rolls in, so does the dreaded flu and back-to-school season. While we can’t completely avoid germs, there are steps we can take to support our immune systems and potentially lessen the impact of illness. We asked Eriel, a valued member of our community, to share her go-to routine when she feels a cold coming on.
Eriel kicks things off with a vitamin C boost, taking 1000 mg every 4 hours. “It’s like giving my immune system a little extra armor,” she says. Along with vitamin C, she also takes zinc, another supplement believed to bolster immunity.
At night, Eriel turns to a powerful herbal duo: echinacea and goldenseal. “I take two droppers full straight, but fair warning, echinacea is pretty nasty! You can mix it with honey to make it a bit more bearable.” These herbs have traditionally been used to support the immune system and fight off infections.
Throughout the day, Eriel focuses on hydration. “I try to drink as much water as I can and add extra ginger to my smoothies,” she explains. Ginger is known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which can be helpful when fighting off a cold.
While Eriel’s routine works well for her, it’s important to remember that everyone is different. Always consult your doctor before starting any new supplements or herbal remedies, especially if you have any existing health conditions or are taking medications.
Eriel’s tips offer a helpful reminder to prioritize our health as flu season approaches. By taking proactive steps, staying up-to-date on our immunizations, and listening to our bodies, we can hopefully minimize the impact of those pesky fall colds and stay healthy throughout the season.
