4 Questions to Ask Your Doctor About Lung Cancer

Preparing questions for your doctor’s office visit can help ensure that you get the most out of your appointment. Before your visit, take a few moments to jot down any concerns, symptoms, or questions you have about your health. This can help you stay focused and organized during your appointment, and ensure that you don’t forget anything important.

Remember, your doctor is there to help you, so don’t be afraid to ask questions or seek clarification on any issues you don’t understand. Taking an active role in your healthcare by preparing questions beforehand can lead to more productive and meaningful discussions with your doctor.

With Black men having the highest reported deaths from lung cancer, here are a few questions you can take to your next doctor’s appointment so you can stay informed about the disease.

1. Advocating for Lung Screenings

If you are a smoker, especially if you have smoked at least 1 pack per day for the past 30 years, or have been in an environment with a smoker, you should ask your doctor about your risk for lung cancer and if you should receive a screening. These tests have been shown to catch lung cancer earlier than waiting for symptoms to appear.

2. Learning the Differences

If you have respiratory (breathing) conditions like asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), ask your doctor how to determine the difference between coughs associated with your condition and coughs associated with lung cancer.

3. Lifestyle Changes

This may seem like an obvious one, but ask if there is anything that you can do to prevent lung cancer or protect your lungs. Your doctor may be able to provide more tailored advice based on your lifestyle and medical history.

4. Knowing the Risks

If you have had pneumonia or COVID-19, ask if it puts you at an increased risk for developing lung cancer. Since lung cancer is usually seen in older adults, you may also want to ask if your current age could put you at risk.
