While chronic conditions last long and may not have a cure, they can be managed through the right care, medicines, healthy eating, exercising, and community.
Many people in underrepresented communities face similar struggles with chronic conditions. Our chronic conditions circle is a place to connect, share experiences, and find the strength in community to manage your health and thrive.
Learn about Myoshi’s journey with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and her tips for coping with the condition.
When it comes to our health, these five affect our community the most:
As the leading cause of death in the U.S., heart disease includes the conditions that can change how your heart functions whether it’s how blood flows in it or how it beats.
There are 3 main types of diabetes, which occurs when your blood sugar, or glucose, is too high. Whether you have type 1, type 2, or gestational diabetes, your body may not be able to produce enough insulin or use it properly.
Lung diseases are conditions that impact your ability to breathe easily, such as asthma, lung cancer, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Genetics or air quality can cause these chronic respiratory illnesses.
Our kidneys help remove fluid and wastes from your blood. When they have been damaged, they are not able to clean your blood properly. This can lead to chronic kidney disease and even end-stage renal disease.
Also known as high blood pressure (HBP), more than 50% of Black Americans have hypertension. When uncontrolled, HBP can lead to other chronic diseases such as heart disease and chronic kidney disease.
When we are not included in clinical research, we can’t be sure if a treatment will work just as well or be just as safe for us as it will for other races.
By participating in clinical research, we can give ourselves a chance to have treatments that may work better and be safer for us.
Learning more about clinical research can be a critical step in improving health outcomes for future generations.
If you still have questions, you are not alone.
