Our communities have been left out of conversations and solutions that could improve our gut health.
Let’s change that.
Many factors, from access to healthy food to environmental stressors, impact gut health in underrepresented communities. Our gut health circle offers culturally-relevant information, resources, and a supportive network to help you navigate these challenges and make informed decisions for better digestive well-being.
Dr. Marsh explains why gut health should be a priority for our communities and tips on where to start.
When it comes to our health, these four affect our community the most:
IBD affects the digestive system and presents unique challenges for underrepresented communities. We often experience disparities in access to care, which can lead to later diagnoses and more severe outcomes.
UC is a type of IBD affecting the colon. For underrepresented communities, UC can present unique challenges, including potential delays in diagnosis, variations in how symptoms appear, and disparities in access to effective treatments.
Crohn’s disease, a IBD, is a chronic (long-term) condition that can cause inflammation and ulcers throughout the digestive tract. Understanding Crohn’s disease is particularly important for our communities, where access to care and other factors may influence its diagnosis and management.
Colorectal cancer is a type of cancer that starts in the colon or rectum, which are parts of your body that help you go to the bathroom. It can cause things like changes in your poop, bleeding when you go, and belly pain. It’s important for our communities to be aware of this condition and get screened.
When we are not included in clinical research, we can’t be sure if a treatment will work just as well or be just as safe for us as it will for other races.
By participating in clinical research, we can give ourselves a chance to have treatments that may work better and be safer for us.
Learning more about clinical research can be a critical step in improving health outcomes for future generations.
If you still have questions, you are not alone.
