Did you know that APOL1-mediated kidney disease, a genetic condition that can lead to kidney failure, is more common in Black communities? This condition occurs when a person inherits mutations in both APOL1 genes. Each of us has two APOL1 (apolipoprotein L1) genes, which produce a vital protein in our immune system.
Typically, these genes make a helpful immune system protein, but some individuals are born with mutations that can increase the risk of kidney disease. Interestingly, these mutations used to offer increased protection against a parasite causing African sleeping sickness, however, today, they can also raise the risk of significant kidney damage.
It’s essential for everyone, especially those of us with roots in Western or Central Africa or ancestors from these regions, to be aware of APOL1 gene mutations and its impact on our kidney health. Let’s come together to raise awareness and support each other in staying healthy! #APOL1Aware
